Gift Buying: Thinking Outside the Box

I know the frustration of trying to find a gift for somebody who seems to have everything. What finally helped me take the angst out of gift buying was starting to think outside the box. Since then, it seems to be easier to find something that my loved one will like, whatever the occasion. These days, I look in unusual places for gift ideas. Instead of retail shops, I see what is happening at local auction houses. I may look into getting my loved one something they've expressed an interest in recently, like taking guitar lessons. I may even surprise my friend with a visit from a chef who prepares a special meal just for him or her. If you have the gift buying blues, let me help. I'll provide some tips on how to get clues for wonderful presents that will delight and amaze your loved ones.

Need New Carpet Installed In Your Business? 3 Things To Know

Peggy Lee

If the carpet in your business is starting to look old, it may be time to change out the carpet in your business. Installing new carpet can increase the value and appeal of your business to customers. A business that looks well put together has more appeal than a business that looks like the owners don't care about it.

1. You'll Need to Tear Out Your Old Flooring

The first thing that you need to do is tear out your old flooring. How much labor this requires depends greatly on the type of flooring that you need to tear out. Tearing out old carpet is going to be a much faster process than tearing out hardwood floors or tile, for example.

If you want new carpet put down correctly, you are going to need to remove the old flooring. You don't want to put carpet down on top of your old flooring.

2. You'll Need to Build Up the Base of the Floor

Once the old carpet is removed, you are going to want to build up the base of the floor and prepare it. The process of building up the base of your floor depends upon the type of base that you have and the condition of the base of the floor.

For example, a patching compound may need to be used on the floor to repair damage to the subfloor. Or a skim coat may need to be applied to the floor to ensure that the surface is smooth and even. Or a sealant may need to be applied to the base floor to create a protective layer between the base and the new carpet material.

3. You'll Need to Choose the Materials Carefully

Once the base is built-up, it is time to think about the materials for the floor in your store. First, you'll need to decide on how much cushioning you want the store to have. If you want the store to be comfortable and have a home-like feel, you'll want to put down a thick layer of padding. If you want a more industrial, hard floor feeling, you'll want to put down a thinner pad.

Second, you need to think about what type of carpet you need. Do you have a high-traffic business area? If so, you'll want really strong carpet. Do you have a lot of moisture inside of your building? If so you'll want to install carpet that is able to withstand high humidity. Do you work with chemicals? Then you'll want to install carpet that responds non-reactively to certain types of chemicals.

If you want to put down new carpet in your business, remember that the old flooring will need to be torn out, the base will need to be built up, and then you'll need to choose and install the new flooring. You may want to do this one section at a time inside of your store, or close down your store for a few days for this process to take place.
