Gift Buying: Thinking Outside the Box

I know the frustration of trying to find a gift for somebody who seems to have everything. What finally helped me take the angst out of gift buying was starting to think outside the box. Since then, it seems to be easier to find something that my loved one will like, whatever the occasion. These days, I look in unusual places for gift ideas. Instead of retail shops, I see what is happening at local auction houses. I may look into getting my loved one something they've expressed an interest in recently, like taking guitar lessons. I may even surprise my friend with a visit from a chef who prepares a special meal just for him or her. If you have the gift buying blues, let me help. I'll provide some tips on how to get clues for wonderful presents that will delight and amaze your loved ones.

Two Tips For Parents Who Are Going Shopping For Graduation Gifts For Their Children

Peggy Lee

If your child is graduating from high school or college and you want to get them a graduation gift, you should check out these two tips.

Buy and customize a graduation stole

You might want to purchase and customize a stole for your child. The reason for this is as follows; in addition to wearing a cap and gown, they may also want to wear this accessory to their graduation ceremony, in order to make a sartorial reference to a school organization they belonged to, their cultural background or their college major. Wearing a customized stole will not only brighten up their outfit (as caps and gowns are often plain and dark) but will also make them stand out amongst the dozens of other graduating students who will also be at the ceremony and will be wearing the same cap and gown as them.

Nowadays, you can buy graduation stoles in almost any color and as such, you should have no difficulty finding one in the color associated with the college major, team or culture that your son or daughter wants to reference with their outfit.

After ordering this item, you should then customize it. This will make the experience of wearing it to the ceremony very meaningful for your child. In regards to how you should customize it, this is a personal decision. You could, for example, order a patch with the high school or college's crest and sew this onto the stole. You could also embroider the school motto, your child's name and the date of the graduation ceremony onto this garment.

Make them a graduation-themed memory box

You could also create a graduation-themed memory box for your child which, whenever they look inside it, will spark fond memories of both their graduation and their final year of school. The first thing you'll need if you decide to give this gift is a beautiful box. You should shop around for a big lidded box with their school colours printed on it.

Then, you might want to buy a memory stick, fill it with the most popular songs from the year they graduated, as well as some voice recordings from their friends, in which these people discuss the best moments they had at school with your child, and put this in the box, along with the graduation stole. You could also print out some photos which show your son or daughter participating in the events run by the school's clubs or teams and ones which show them on stage, receiving their diploma at the graduation ceremony.
